TERETONGA UPDATE : LG ZB FALCON/ANGUS FOGG RACE REPORT (16-17 January 2010)

Hi everyone following a successful race meeting in Invercargill for round three of the BNT V8s Championship where we achieved third place overall for the CRC200 in the LG ZB Falcon.  Here’s our meeting report for you:

TESTING : 1st in both sessions

After a lot of hard work on the car, we were stoked to be able to turn up to the track, unload and setup, and be on the pace straight away. In fact in both test sessions we were around half a second quicker than the rest! When you are able to dominate early like that it definitely helps the mindset of the driver and crew.

QUALIFYING : 2nd  (1:02.482)

We were easily into the top ten shootout, and tried some different pressures and settings during the two first qualifying sessions. I made a couple of small mistakes on our one lap shootout, and we ended up 2nd, a mere 82 hundreths of a second off pole position (1:02.400)…. What could have been !?

RACE 1 (12 laps) : 4th

Starting 2nd, or any of the outside grid positions at Teretonga can easily end in disaster as the inside cars freight train in to the first corner, which is a very fast left hander, leaving the guys on the outside of the grid nowhere to go, and the ensuing melee has caused many a safety car incident over the years! Craig Baird got a “really good” start from P4 and managed to nearly get round the first three cars, as it was we were three wide going in to the turn and something had to give….. I decided that I didn’t want to be the meat in the sandwich, so lifted and we all got around OK. We race settled into a rhythm with Mcintyre, Baird, Edgell and myself gapping the rest of the field and the ensuing intense battle lasted the full 12 laps. Unless you have a clear advantage over the car you are battling with it is very difficult to pass at Teretonga, and despite my best efforts I had to settle for 4th, but the car felt good, we posted the fastest lap time of the race (1:02.746) and we had some further tweaks up our sleeve for race 2.

RACE 2 (12 laps) : 3rd

Starting 4th in this one, we were determined to make up some positions, but despite the car being a little better, the passing opportunities still did not eventuate, but after pressuring Edgell for many laps he finally made a small mistake braking for the hairpin and I was able to sneak past up the inside, and hold third till the end. Again, we posted the fastest lap time of 1:03.293.

RACE 3 (22 laps full reverse grid) : 7th

Starting 19th in this one, and it was to be an epic battle for every one of the 22 laps, we made really good progress in the opening laps, until coming up behind the freight train of Booth and Andersen…. These two were involved in their own battle, and slowed our progress to the point where Baird and McIntyre caught up again. The two Holden chums eventually had a coming together, firing Andersen off the track. The race was so busy, with so many incidents it is hard to remember them all, and hopefully you all caught the action live on TV3. The biggest incident for us came midway through the race when we got tangled up with Clark Procter, wiping out the right hand side of the car.  Initially we were charged with causing the incident, but after careful analysis of the evidence, and a late night session with the stewards, the charges were dropped. We finished the race in 7th place and on the podium for the weekend in third, elevating us to 6th in the championship and only a few points away from the next three teams. Our fastest lap time in this race was 1:03.565 – again the fastest of the field.

OVERALL

Two beautiful sunny days saw the crowd flock to the track, and the signing sessions at Teretonga are some of the the best ones all season, with lots of families, groups, and companies making a day of it.  We were delighted to have topped the charts with our lap times throughout the weekend, along with a podium finish, both of which leave us quietly confident for the next race meeting.

SUZUKI SWIFT CUP

Congratulations once again to our LG Motorsport team mate William Bamber who won two races in the Suzuki Sport Swift Cup. Good job Mini-me!!

NEXT UP

With a lot of panel damage to repair, and the usual maintenance and set up changes, the team will be busy this week preparing for round 4 at Timaru next weekend. We are staying in Invercargill for this, thanks to the Keast family for their hospitality and Invercargill Oil Shop for our worrrkshop base!!

We are hoping for another fine weekend at Timaru, where we are confident of another good showing.  We hold the current lap record there, and aim to lower it further, along with another podium, and a further climb up the championship ladder.

Angus and the LG Motorsport LG ZB V8 Team
