A TRIALLING DAY AT TIMARU: ANGUS FOGG'S LGZB FALCON RACE REPORT

Hi everyone following round four of the BNT V8s Championship where we qualified on pole position, and went on to have a challenging Sunday with weather conditions playing havoc with two of the NZV8s races.  Here’s our meeting report for you, and please give me a call with any questions.

TESTING : 5th in both sessions

We were confident of continuing our recent speed here at Timaru, and so it was to be another reminder of just how competitive this championship is when we were 5th in both the first wet session and then the second dry one. The team worked hard trying different settings and trying to keep up with the ever-changing weather conditions.

QUALIFYING : 1st  (1:05.823)

We knew that qualifying, especially here, would be crucial to finishing well in the races (!?). Once again we were fine tuning the car right up to the top ten shootout, planning that we would get a good gain on new ‘green’ rubber. After missing out on pole by just .084 of a second at Teretonga I was determined to get this one just right! We were very pleased to record a blistering 1.05.823 for pole position, the fastest lap ever in a V8 touring car around this circuit! The car felt really good and well balanced and we were confident of a good showing in race 1.

RACE 1 (12 laps) : 16th

How things change! We woke on Sunday to be greeted with miserable weather, which really didn’t make its mind up all day. As we went out for the warm up laps, it looked as if it was going to clear, and everyone was on dry “slick” tyres, after doing the first two warm up laps it was still dry enough to hang in there with slicks, however after sitting on the grid, the drizzle had conspired to make the track extremely slippery. Way too slippery for the tyre choice, the drama started right from the beginning with cars spinning and running off the track, we only got to turn 2 before performing a pirouette and rejoining further back. I was going to pit that lap as it would have been madness to continue. As it turned out it was something of a blessing spinning early as John McIntyre sped off to an early lead he was the first to encounter the treacherous fast right before the start/finish, and slammed into the barrier closely followed by several other cars. John’s car was a real mess and he had to borrow another car for the rest of the weekend. The restart after this incident was in our opinion an absolute mess, with team managers running up and down pit lane trying to get to the bottom of some dubious restart decisions by officials. As it turned out it became a complete lottery for starting position. We started near the back and slid our way up to 16th…..

RACE 2 (12 laps) : 8th

Of course the race one debacle effectively ruined our weekend, having to start 16th for race two which was dry, we carved through as many as possible to end up 8th. The car wasn’t quite right, but was identically set up to qualifying apart from tyre pressures, and the brakes seemed to have lost their initial “bite” so we battled around some 2 sec off the pace of the front guys. The only slight consolation would be a reasonable start position for the reverse grid race 3….

RACE 3 (22 laps full reverse grid) : DNF

Again the heavens opened, but officialdom had thankfully learnt a lesson from the first race, so declared the race wet, meaning all cars had to be on wet weather tyres instead of slicks. We started 11th and had made a few places up when on the first flying lap we were tagged from behind by a “helpful” competitor, causing us to spin, and then be hit hard in the side by Paul Manuell who had nowhere to go. Both cars sustained heavy damage, and as I write this my neck and shoulder are pretty tender too!! The cars were too badly damaged to continue so Paul and I watched the race from the sidelines. The offending competitor received a drive-through penalty, but once again our progress had been halted through no fault of our own!

WHATS NEXT ??

We are currently heading north, and we have a big job ahead to repair the car in time for Manfeild in three weeks time, but I am sure the team at Transvisual will be more than up to the job (Hi Richard!) and the LGZB Falcon will once again look as well as it goes !!

FEEDBACK

Our “flamethrower” continues to impress the crowd and the TV commentators, even that staunch Holden man Murph has some complimentary thing to say, with some very positive comments too about our record lap in the top ten shootout.  Yet again we seemed to get more than our fair share of TV coverage throughout the weekend.

SUZUKI SWIFT CUP

Congratulations once again to our LG Motorsport team mate William Bamber who qualified on pole (again!) and won race three in the Suzuki Sport Swift Cup. Good job Mini-me!!

Angus and the LG Motorsport LG ZB V8 Team
